In his World Theatre Day Address, Ramu Ramanathan closes with a reference to a play about books (and ideas) - Les Combustibles. "A life without books (and indeed words) seems meaningless to them.". Last month we celebrated World Book Day on the 23rd, which is also William Shakespeare and Cervantes' death anniversary. Interestingly, not many realise that UNESCO organized the World Book Day for the first time as recently as 1995 and it was done with the aim to promote reading, publishing and copyright!
Last month, theatre was also in the news with the Olivier Awards being announced on the 9th of April. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child created history with taking home 9 awards. As Lynn Gardner observes "its true success is in making theatre universally appealing". Harry Potter has managed to attract first time audiences and hopefully given them a reason to return to the theatre.
One can only hope to see a similar turn out of first-timers this summer with the mouth watering buffet of plays and workshops across the city.
